The History Center in Tompkins County has recently
opened the highly anticipated exhibition
Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer.
Date & Time: May 2014 through May 2015
401 East State/MLK St. Ithaca, NY
From the opening weekend of Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer at The History Center in Tompkins County: A panel of pioneers with (from L-R) David VanKoevering (the sales wizard who pioneered the marketing of the Minimoog), Herbert A. Deutsch (the professor and experimental jazz musician whose desire for a new sounds and a new instrument in 1963 lead to the birth of the Moog synthesizer), Michelle Moog-Koussa (Executive Director at Bob Moog Foundation ), David Borden (of Mother Mallard fame, who lovingly spent almost every night for four solid years in the studio of R.A. Moog, Co. in the mid-'60s learning, and then using, the Moog modular), and Bill Hemsath, (who took matters into his own hands and created the Min A and Min B, the first two prototypes of the Minimoog, and the predecessors to the iconic Minimoog Model D).

Mother Mallard returns to the Museum, where they have held performances since we opened 1973! Founded and directed by David Borden in 1969, Mother Mallard is the world’s first synthesizer ensemble. Their program will feature selections from Borden’s Earth Journeys, all variations on “Happy Birthday” and receiving their first performance tonight. Mother Mallard dedicates this performance to the memory of Tom Leavitt (1930–2010), founding director of the Johnson Museum.

Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company, makers of fine electronic music since 1969.
One of the first live synthesizer ensembles wasn't Tangerine Dream, but Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company, led by composer David Borden. Mounting the stage with three massive Moog Modular synthesizers, they spun out their intricate cyclical melodies. We listen back to their now classic albums for this Ancient Echo.
